On May 17, 1902, archaeologist Valerios Stais was examining artifacts recovered from a Roman-era shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera when he noticed something impossible: a corroded lump of bronze with gear wheels embedded in it. The wreck had been found by sponge divers in 1901, but this fragment had sat unnoticed among the haul. What Stais had found was the Antikythera mechanism -- a 2,000-year-old analog computer built by the ancient Greeks.

The device dates to approximately 100 BC. It contains over 30 bronze gears, precisely cut and interlocking, housed in a wooden case roughly the size of a shoebox. When operated by a hand crank, it could predict the positions of the sun, moon, and planets, track lunar and solar eclipses, and even calculate the timing of the Olympic Games. No other geared mechanism of this complexity is known from the ancient world, and nothing comparable appeared again until medieval cathedral clocks over a thousand years later.

For decades, scholars refused to accept it. The device was too complex, too advanced for its era. It was not until the 1970s, when X-ray imaging revealed the full internal gear structure, that the mechanism's sophistication became undeniable. Modern CT scans have since revealed inscriptions, additional gears, and a level of mechanical precision that challenges assumptions about ancient technology.

The Antikythera mechanism proves that technological capability does not always advance in a straight line. The Greeks built a mechanical computer, and then the knowledge to build another one vanished for a millennium. Progress is not inevitable. It is contingent on transmission, on someone writing it down and someone else reading it. When that chain breaks, even genius disappears.
