Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in Rouen, France, on May 30, 1431. She was 19 years old. The English had captured her a year earlier, tried her for heresy, and convicted her of wearing men's clothing and claiming direct communication with God. The trial was political theater -- the English needed her discredited to undermine the French king she had helped crown. The charge was heresy, but the crime was effectiveness.

Joan was born around 1412 in Domremy, a village in northeastern France. She was illiterate, a peasant girl who claimed to hear the voices of saints commanding her to drive the English from France and deliver the Dauphin Charles to his coronation. At 17, she convinced the uncrowned king to give her command of troops. She led the French to a stunning victory at Orleans in 1429, lifting a siege that had seemed hopeless. Within months, Charles VII was crowned at Reims Cathedral.

How she did it remains debated. She had no military training, yet she made decisions that experienced commanders respected. She led from the front, was wounded multiple times, and projected an absolute certainty that inspired troops and terrified enemies. Her strategy was aggressive and direct -- attack, do not wait. Whether this was divine guidance or natural instinct, it worked.

Twenty-five years after her execution, a rehabilitation trial overturned the conviction. In 1920, the Catholic Church canonized her as a saint. Joan's legacy is not about mysticism. It is about what happens when someone with no credentials, no training, and no authority enters a system and redesigns its output through sheer conviction. She was 19, illiterate, and she changed the course of a war. The system burned her for it.
