William Herschel discovered Uranus on March 13, 1781, from his backyard in Bath, England. He was not a professional astronomer. He was a musician who ground telescope mirrors as a hobby, building his own instruments because he could not afford comparable quality. That night, surveying the sky, he noticed an object appearing as a disk rather than a point. He thought it might be a comet. It was a planet.

The discovery doubled the known size of the solar system. Mercury through Saturn had been known since antiquity. Uranus required a telescope and had been observed before but always mistaken for a star. Herschel recognized it because his telescope was better and he was looking carefully. Within months, other astronomers confirmed it.

Herschel wanted to name it Georgium Sidus after King George III. The community settled on Uranus. The discovery made him famous. King George appointed him Court Astronomer, funded larger telescopes, and Herschel quit music. He eventually built a 40-foot instrument, the world's largest for 50 years. He discovered moons of Uranus and Saturn, cataloged over 2,500 nebulae, and was the first to realize some nebulae are distant galaxies.

Herschel's story is a reminder that major discoveries often come from outside established institutions. He had no university training, no professional equipment. What he had was curiosity, technical skill, and thousands of hours grinding mirrors and studying the sky. The tools he needed did not exist, so he built them. The data was not published, so he collected it. The planet was always there. He just had to look.
