On April 7, 1795, France became the first country to officially adopt the metric system, replacing centuries of local measurements with a universal system based on mathematics. A meter was one ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator. A gram was the mass of a cubic centimeter of water. Everything scaled by powers of ten. No more feet, furlongs, or fathoms. Just clean, rational units built from first principles.
Before the metric system, measurement was chaos. Every region had its own standards. A pound in Paris wasn't a pound in Lyon. The French Revolution saw measurement as a tool of oppression — inconsistent standards benefited whoever controlled them. A rational system, based on nature, would be egalitarian.
The task fell to scientists including Laplace and Lavoisier. They sent surveyors to measure the meridian arc from Dunkirk to Barcelona, calculating the distance from pole to equator. It took six years during a war.

In practice, it was disruptive. Bakers resisted weighing flour in grams. Napoleon briefly reinstated traditional units. Full conversion didn't happen until the late 19th century. But France built the infrastructure — standard weights in every town hall, metric taught in schools, legal contracts tied to metric units. Slowly the system became invisible.
By the 20th century, nearly every country had adopted it. The notable holdouts: the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar. Americans still measure height in feet, weight in pounds, temperature in Fahrenheit. The metric system proved that measurement isn't neutral. It's a design choice. France didn't just redesign units in 1795. It redesigned how the world thinks about quantity.
