On this day in 1938 — Orson Welles broadcast War of the Worlds. Mass media's first viral design experiment.

On October 30, 1938, at 8:00 p.m., CBS Radio aired an adaptation of H.G. Wells's "War of the Worlds" as part of "The Mercury Theatre on the Air." The broadcast was presented as a series of simulated news bulletins reporting a Martian invasion of New Jersey. Orson Welles, 23 years old, directed and narrated. Within minutes, some listeners believed aliens were actually attacking. The panic was real, even if it was smaller than legend suggests.

The broadcast was designed to sound authentic. It opened with a weather report and dance music, then interrupted with increasingly urgent news flashes. Reporters described explosions, poisonous gas, and giant alien machines striding across the countryside. Welles and his team understood that people trusted the format of a news broadcast. By mimicking that format, they could make fiction feel like fact.

The real panic was overstated by newspapers eager to discredit radio as a competitor. But some people did flee their homes, call police, and jam phone lines. The broadcast revealed something important: media formats carry authority independent of content. When information arrives in the shape of news, people process it as news, regardless of whether it is true.

Welles apologized publicly but privately was delighted. The broadcast made him famous overnight and led directly to his Hollywood career and Citizen Kane. October 30, 1938, was the first mass-media viral event -- a designed experience that escaped its frame and became something its creators did not fully intend. The lesson holds: when you build a communication system powerful enough to reach millions, you have also built a system capable of deceiving millions. The medium does not distinguish between truth and performance. That job falls to us.
